"Floatation therapy eased my backaches!"
Glancing at her calendar, Karen Pichkhadze groaned. Not another day of open-house appointments, she thought. All that driving is going to kill my back.
For as long as she could remember, Karen had grappled with upper-back pain. "I always brushed it off, but when I started working as a realtor, the 80-hour workweeks and long car rides quickly took a toll on my neck and shoulders," she says. "Simple movments became torture!"
To soothe her pain, Karen tried everything from over-the-counter remedies to massages, but nothing worked. So when a relative suggested floatation therapy, Karen quickly made an appointment to "float" at a local wellness center.
The floatation session involved lying in a "pod" that was partially filled iwth salt-infused water, which enabled Karen to float as though she were weightless.
After one hour, Karen’s upper-back pain disappeared. "Since then, I’ve been going once a week, and I’ve experienced zero pain!" she raves. "I feel like a brand new person!"
How Floating Heals Pain
Floatation therapy temporarily frees the body from the constant pull of gravity, says H. Hooshmand, M.D., a neurologist in Vero Beach, Florida. This tension release naturally lowers the body’s production of the stress hormone cortisol to increase relaxation and lessen sensitivity to pain.
